Yours, Truly (Tuo, Sempre), Braden Hollis | Lucas Rubly

Samuele Visentin is pleased to present Yours Truly (Tuo, Sempre), a two-person exhibition bringing together African American artist Braden Hollis and Brazilian artist Lucas Rubly.

Exploring themes of desire, nostalgia and innocence, the works on view unfold as personal dedications to intimate and fleeting moments. Across different visual languages, both artists share an interest in authenticity and in the ways individual experience can be translated into images.

In Braden Hollis’s work, the freedom of artistic expression emerges through the recurring figure of the solo performer: a dancer, a singer-songwriter dressed in vivid red, a model at work on set. Hollis’s predominantly Black subjects are portrayed in moments of self-expression, using their bodies, appearance and presence beneath the spotlight of the stage. Performance becomes a space of possibility and revelation. By withholding or obscuring the defining features of the figures, Hollis shifts attention away from individual identity and toward gesture itself, allowing movement and posture to become expressions of sensitivity, confidence and interiority.

Lucas Rubly, by contrast, turns to the nostalgic transition from innocence to awareness, exploring how memory reshapes what has passed and what can still be recalled. Vases of flowers, sandcastles, baskets of fruit and reflections of trees on water become images of a reality defined by its capacity for change. Rather than functioning as reminders of the world’s finitude, however, Rubly’s works act as testimonies to its existence. In the gradual wilting of a flower in a vase, for
instance, the course of life is revealed through both its melancholic brevity and its unexpected beauty.

Where Hollis finds in performance a gesture capable of liberating and affirming the present, Rubly looks toward the passage of time and the transformations it inevitably brings. The two artists meet within a similarly suspended space: one in which gesture asserts the immediacy of the present, while matter already carries the signs of its transformation.
